I appreciate all the feedback so far. At this point I am thinking
there is so much old Bridgeport left in the machine that I will gut
it and basically start over. I can't figure out where the wires go
since it was done by a professional retrofitter who tried to leave as
much as possible. Then I plan to put in some additional protection.
It looks like one problem I have is that I am controlling the
powersupply with a relay on the DC side instead of the AC side. That
may be causing some spikes on startup. Also plan to rewire the motors
bipolar and use the 5amp range with limit resistor on the Gecko. If
it all works I will try to write it up for others to benefit in the
future. As Les Newell has suggested there is always the switch to
servos if this fails... Many thanks for the good suggestions! I will
let you know if I get it solved.
Thanks
