Keith, Two things, try swapping the motor or the drive to determine which it might be. Also, since it is only doing it on start up and it is an obvious surge through the Gecko that is causing this, consider using a variac on the primary. Start the current low and gradually increase until everything is up. Here's what I'm thinking it may be. The Gecko is a chopper drive as you know. When you boot up it might not have time to cut the current back and is acting like an L/R drive and fries itself. Dont know if thats feasible but anything is possible. Try a variac on the primary and slowly increase the current. A 110volt 10 amp would be ample and cost less than a new drive. Check Ebay. A guy had them on their pretty cheap. Your motors are new and it isn't likely one would be bad. I know you've had this probelm since the retrofit. Another thing, your supply may be too large. Geckos are only rated for 7 amps. It's really surprising how small a power supply we can get by with. Sometimes
it's not good to have too much curent available. Id rather stall than fry things.

Hi Guys, My bridgeport retrofit continues to burn Gecko drives. It
happened just a few minutes ago when I powered up the machine and
computer. The powersupply was plugged in but the relay controlling
the powersupply was off. When I hit the button in the software to
turn on the relay the Gecko immediately burned as did the protecting
fuse. It always happens on the y axis when I first start up. It
never seems to happen while running the machine. This is at least the
fourth time this has occurred. Each time I think I have found the
problem but alas, no. The last time was early Feb and then again
last week. A new Gecko was installed thursday. It makes no sense
why the thing would run for a month with no trouble. It think
everything is installed correctly but there must be a powersurge from
the powersupply when the relay first turns on. Is this a possibility
and is there a way to protect from this?
Thanks for any ideas!
