Shifting from low range to high range via some NC controlled actuator would be virtually impossible I'd think. I've never seen one that could be shifted without assisting by clocking the spindle with the other hand. Sometimes they go right in but not very often. Similar to shifting even a manual transmission in a car with the engine off. Some gears are synchronised and some are not.

Possibly, a very complex setup involving relays to quickly change the polarity of the motor back and forth with small pulses of current to oscilate the spindle while the lever was being positioned and limits to feedback to the control that the shift was indeed completed.

Possibly a brake on the spindle and the motor shaft with sensors that would stop them in the same position everytime to allow shifting with an actuator where the gears are synchronised.

It's basically a two speed transmission and if its in high range it will be all speed and no low end torque and in low range it would be all torque and no speed.

I had thought about this as well. There are issues with the controller
though - you have to be sure that the crank is only turned when the
spindle is running, for instance.

Another option is to use a DC motor and drive, like this guy did:

You get full torque at all speeds, so that's not a problem. You don;t
get "extra" torque on the low end though, so it may still me a good idea
to have changeable gearing.

I'm definitely curious about answers to this question as well.
