The Tree was designed to be shifted in this manner. Bridgeports were designed for manual operation and are not. The shift from low to high is anything but smooth. A VFD might make this possible but, it would need to be turning very slowly and have limits to prove everything back to the control. The shift mechanism is very delicate as well and cannot be forced or the mechanism is easily damaged. Coupled with fact that there is spring resistance from high to low and the opposite from low to high. Which would require more force of the actuator in one direction. Maybe, I'm being over-analytical but, I think it would be a stretch and not too healthy for the mechanism clunking in and out.

Shifting these improperly prompted the old joke "Hey while you're grinding that coffee, I'll take a pound" :-).

My Tree Mill Journeyman 300 came with a low pressure air cylinder and a
regulator with solenoid valves for shifting gears. I decided I would retain
this set up when I retrofitted it to newer servo and spindle motor controls.
It works great. Use 120VAC solenoids and 30 psi air pressure to actuate it.
Seems to shift right into gear without the spindle turning.
