It here is a hard and fast rule, I'll look a ittle stupid, but...

for the most part, the armature of the motor is X inches in diameter
and X inches long. that is one stack.

if it is 2X long, that is double stack and has about double the power,
3X long. The ends remaind the same, just more laminations between them.

When you pull apart some old printers and stuff, you can find motors
that are 1/2X long, or so it would seem by the outside looking at the
laminations stack.

If you check a motor it might be 150 oz-in for single stack, 300 for
dbl and 450 for triple stack.

moving up to a NEMA34, it would be similar, but starting in a higher
range.

So, a triple stack NEMA-23 would actually have more power than a
single stack NEMA-34. the 23 would be longer and skinnier, and as was
noted, have a faster top end.

That is just my observations, I have not seen any written deffinations
for the term.
