Bill,
I use a highly modified MaxNC, my dad uses a Sherline I cnc'd for him.
We both use this in the course of making a living. I really thought the
Max was the better, more rigid machine. Theoretically perhaps it is, but
I find the gib adjustment is very touchy, and it's prone to loosening up
if you get into any chatter. Also, spindle motor isn't anything to get
excited about, nor are the collets. Sherline has a vastly better spindle
and motor, and they have thread-on tool holders from 3/16 to 3/8 dia.
allowing you to do tool changes.
Bummer on the Sherline is the leadscrew nuts, which while adjustable,
don't seem to hold adjustment long. (though they are easy to adjust.
Would suggest if you want turn key, to look at Flashcut software to
motors, and get the CNC ready Sherline which has much better mounting
flanges than Flashcut (unless they've upgraded theirs).
If you go with the Max, make sure you get the model with the
anti-backlash nuts. I adapted a Sherline motor/spindle to mine.
Lot of work. Don't know if Max is selling a kit with the higher power
motors, if so it would be cheaper than Flashcut and is usable without
requiring a pentium.
