Yes, makes sense. I have bearings at the other end of the lead screw too.

I take out end play the same way. Turn the lead screw until the shoulder at
the other end of the lead screw presses tight against the bearing and then
tighten the lock nut.

The endplate has a recess into which the bearing is inserted. A clip holds
it in place. The lead screw has the shoulder.
I turned the 1/4-20 leadscrew down to fit inside the bearing using a small
DB-200 Unimat Lathe.
Your technique is simpler; I always use the most complicated method I can
think of because I never think of the simple way.
