Hi John,
I saw what looked like bearings between the two bronze bushings but it
wasn't clear how it all works.
In my case, the flying head on the Z axis has pins that register in the
circuit board panel before the spring loaded programming pins make contact
with the board. I could be 0.020" off and not care in this case. Given
that I have to program between 1000 and 2000 boards at a time, this was
always intended to be a dedicated XYZ assembly that would also teach me a
few things. Got me into MACH2 for instance.

This link points to a fairly large (115K) picture of the programming head.
The three posts are tapered and slide into the mounting holes. This
assembly will fit onto the Z axis.
