the reason is that control systems are still in the dark ages.
let me illistrate: all of you have heard the fabled assembly instructions of the 1970's "fold flap a into slot c" then you would have to go to 2 other pages in the assembly instructions to figure out what the heck that means?
try to assemble most k-mart products today doesn't usually even require reading the directions at all because the ***%%*&&*& cheap thing only goes together one way. half of the time instructions are only pictures (for those forign invaders who don't even speak english or spanish).
my point is cnc control software is still folding flaps into slots and is totally ignoring new human interface standards being used since the mid 90's. when conversational style controls meet with 2d and 3d sylist scanners, mpeg and html the market will boom. there is an army of hobbiests still buying model kits and making modifications to them. why not sell "projects" that can be modified in a dynamic and "conversatonal" manor?

I wonder why one of the 'biggies' in home-shop/construction tools hasn't
come out with an 'affordable' smallish CNC gantry machine/router. I'd
think Makita, Ryobi, etc. could produce one for a decent price.
And that's just flatbed stuff. Why aren't there any reasonably priced
smallish-scale 3-D (prototype) machines yet?? Why are we still building
these things ourselves?? (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)
Guess they don't see a real market for such a thing ... or their
designers don't have much 'vision' .. or both?? I know they're mainly
in the home construction game, but tools is tools. :)
