because drivers can be loaded and unloaded at will, linux is really
always running in "safe mode"

perhaps you mean single mode

any linux sys should run in this mode by simply typing "single" at the
boot prompt...

emc can only be run by root, unless you really really know what you are
doing.

what error messages are you getting?
