Prox switches come in three flavours (with respect to their outputs)

3 wire NPN
3 wire PNP
2 wire

Two wire sensors are meant to be wired between 18-24V and the +ve end of an
optocoupler LED.
They typically pass <1mA when not triggered and >7mA when they are. Whilst
simple to wire,
They can be tricky to parallel

3 wire PNP types have one wire to ground, one wire to 18-24V (I run min on
12V and they seem fine)
And the third gets pulled high when the prox triggers. To wire these to a
parallel port you need
a 5.1V zenner between the pin and GND and a resistor (a few K) between the
pin and the output of the
Prox. You only need one of these circuits for each input pin, you then wire
all the proxes in parallel

3 wire NPN are the most useful for hobby applications, 1 wire to 18-24, one
to GND, and the other to
The input pin with a pull up resistor. You can wire multiple NPN 3wire
proxes in parallel.
