Hi,
the USB port and the other is a direct plug-in into the IDE bus; usually as
Secondary Slave to the CDROM or DVD.
On my WIN-XP Pro system, I have it connected via USB from a combo drive that
is both a floppy and a bunch of CF type cards. The floppy is connected via
the normal cable and the USB hooks to the other devices. It all fits in a
standard 3.5" floppy form factor.
On the Linux PC104 hardware I have a CF card slot that is wired directly as
primary slave. On the Linux Fedora system my CF cards can be either through
a USB SmartDisk CF reader or through a special adaptor that connects to the
Secondary IDE as the slave device.
None of the IDE types can be hot-plugged. The system needs to find them on
booting up. The USB ones can be hot plugged although you may have to
configure windows so it knows that.
