How about a USB flash drive?

Here is 256MB of non-volatile RAM that looks exactly like a disk to the
computer when it is plugged into a USB port. Pretty indestructible - the
only concern is removing it while you are writing data to it but that
would kill a floppy disk too.

If you are feeling spendy, the same store has the 1GB unit for $40 and a
4GB unit for $140.

The nice thing with these is that you can keep frequently used utilities
on them. Not all programs need to be "installed" or run from C:\Program
Files\xxx
