The metal parts of the scale are internally connected to the "+" of the battery or scale power supply.
Make sure that your external power supply(or DRO readout) does not have the "-" grounded to the chassis of the machine.

quick update. sure enough, there's approx. 5VDC between the scale and
saddle. any ideas how to deal with this?
