The single axis chip that can do any kind of motor is $70. Add an
H-bridge, and it's a design. You can communicate over CAN or serial or
even parallel <spit>.
The four axis chip is $177. You add four H-bridges and it's a whole machine.
Again, we didn't do that because we like to change things. The
Robostix was $50 and if we need more CPU power, you can plug in a
Gumstix for another $100 and accomplish everything this chip does.
I'm sure the chip is more rugged, though.
The chips that only do steppers are a bit cheaper, but not much.
