Control systems are exempt from ROHS until Jan 2008.
Devices that run at more than 1000V are exempt, and that can mean
suppression of voltages more than 1000V
Devices that run at over 100MHz are exempt.
Network communications systems are exempt which in some cases can include a
PC and things it is attached to. (bit of a grey area)
Service parts on equipment built before the July 2006 are also exempt, so if
you are rebuilding an old machine RoHs doesn't apply.
Also it is the sale in Europe that is restricted, if you are bringing a
device in for your own use, Customs won't give a damn about it, they have
enough trouble finding drugs let alone lead.

Hi,
Xylotex products contain lead (Pb) based solder which is a
restricted substance in the EU. Because of the lead, Xylotex
products are not RoHS compliant, and are restricted from being
imported in to the EU.
Not so wierd after all. The RoHS restriction is what is wierd.
