Hello,
Keep in mind that the encoder doesn't HAVE TO BE on the motor
shaft...
Your specific situation will determine what you can do; but there
are more than a few cases where encoders are mounted at some other
point in the drive train.
One hobbyist level case is the leadscrew mouting of the encoders in
Aaron Moss's Industrialhobbies.com benchmill conversions.

P.S. It may also be possible to mount the encoder on an extension to
the FRONT shaft....
