You should try EMC2.
You can easily get 50KHz stepping using an old PC - something in the
P3-800 range. Faster computers will get you somewhat faster step rates
- up to 100 KHz or so. The high step rate option will be in the next
release (EMC2.2), which should be coming soon - in the next couple of
months.
The cost of a new PC is enough to buy step generation hardware, like the
Mesa Electronics 5I20. This is a PCI card with 72 I/O points, which can
do step generation (up to some MHz), PWM generation (for driving
servos), and encoder reading, in case you want position feedback. The
5I20 is $199, much less than a new PC (that has parallel ports and/or
available PCI slots).
And while you're downloading Linux CDs, grab the EMC2 Live CD ;)

This is a bootable CD - you don't have to install to try it out.
