DOS and/or GWBASIC control of LPT-1

Just discovered operating systems Windows XP and newer won't allow DOS
(Assy. code and/or GWBASIC) control of bits of the "Data Byte" (pins 2-
9)of the Parallel Port, now not available on "new" PC's, anyway. This
precludes operation of my home-brew stuff that did just fine with an
older Compaq, which died.

Have a newer HP with Win.XP. ANY way to "fool" it into controlling the
LPT-1 via DOS apps? I hate to DELETE the Win.XP and load (only) MSDOS
and GWBASIC. Not even sure if that'd work!
