Hmm-I would like to point out that the40,000 hour life of the lamp is NOT a guarantee-it is sort of an "average" lifespan for that particular lamp, and is arrived at through testing and extrapolation.
What it really means is that if you run a statistically significant number of lamps at their rated current, after 40,000 hours half of them will have failed, and half will still be working.

I respectfully disagree. If lighning strikes the power line and the machines see a surge sure a lot of things will be damaged. Vibration on the BEI encoder is not the reason it failed . It failed because the machine propably had 40,000 hrs.
The owner has a choice. My method which is a five minute fix to unsolder and replace a $1.60 bulb that the manufacture selected to work on his machine and know it will work and will probnably last another 40,000 hrs. Or, to figure out which LED is best, which one will fit, what current limiting resistor to use, how to orientate the led, how to mount it so that it will work with the encoder disk and read head and HOPE that it will work. And most importantly since the orignator did know what to do it seems much more practical to simply replace the bulb.
