I've already purchased a Avago encoder from DigiKey for this project. My concern is how to make a good enough shaft to keep the encoder within specs, and where to package the single end to double ended converter. This encoder does not actually have a true shaft in the middle, so I will have to create something. It has a coupler which serves as a shaft through the 2 precision ball bearings, but I will have to make everything above that.
BTW do NOT use super glue where visibility or looks count. It tends to out gas and leave a white film all around it. I have heard of the AMTs having that problem, but have never heard of it on a Avago (formerly HP) brand.

quirk. At least on
some instances, there is a looseness between the molded plastic shaft
adapters and the
encoder ring that slips over the splines on that. Either super glue or
something like
RTV can be used to secure the ring so it doesn't rattle.
