Did you read the original post? He doesn't want bi-directional, he wants a
standard parallel port. Maybe.

His pull-ups may not be working for various reasons, the data lines may be
open collector (for bi-directional), there may not be resistors on the port
itself, the port is at 3.3v and not 5v, the port can't source as much
current as his old one could, and so on.

But setting it to ECP or EPP ain't gunna help.
