This is why Microsoft has their WHQL program

If you want to go cheap with your 3rd party peripheral, you spends your
money and you takes your chances.

If you go with a mainstream product, they will have been WHQL approved --
sometimes cheaper is not better.

It only costs $250 per version of Windows (XP, Vista, Win7, Win8, etc...) so
there is no real reason for the manufacturer to not apply...
