The demo is free and functional for short bits of G Code. Go to http://www.machsupport.com/

I bought the license and don't regret it at all. Mach3 has config files to allow use of both a mill and a lathe. There is a beta version of a CAM program for mills on the Artsoft Web site called LazyCam. It's a bit quirky but I can crank out G Code for clock frame and wheel cutting without a great deal of trouble. For lathe users, the even-more-beta LazyTurn is more trouble to use. However, you can get a feel for CNC machining at a reasonable cost. It's too bad that Artsoft stopped development of their CAM programs because the alternatives are rather pricey.

One of the best resources for learning CNC using Mach3 is the Mach3 forum at http://www.machsupport.com/forum/index.php

I tried Linux a few years ago but the absence of a CAM program was a deterrent. Once I get another (used) PC, I want to try the Ubuntu version and revisit EMC. The Linux learning curve is a bit less now than years ago but if you are a Windows user and new to CNC machining, the learning curves of CAD, CAM and the motor controller software are time consuming enough without adding Linux. None of these are "rocket science" but the time constraint led me to Mach3.

I am confused about mach 3 software. I see it for sale and I see free downloads. Where is the best place to get it? Are the free downloads sample versions or are the for sale versions from people trying to take advantage of ignorant people like me?
