Generally, you can run 1 3 phase VFD on single phase, but you're supposed
to derate it somewhat. In any case, often the manufacturers will not
recommend it. That said, I have used a 3 ph 5HP VFD on single
phase to run my 5hp LeBlond. On the other hand, I got it cheap so if
it blows up I'm not out a lot.

The big problem is that you tend to overstress the rectifiers unless
they are designed with single phase in mind. If you are running light
loads, it will probably work. Heavy loads will probably fry it. I
would expect a 10hp VFD to be able to handle a 5hp motor on single phase,
but the manufactuer should be able to say for sure.

For various reasons I tend not to use the VFD a lot and stick with my
rotary converter.
