Cheap tools are cheap for a reason.
Most of these "tightwads" however, probably have to pinch pennies long
and hard to buy even the modest tooling they do have. Many folks just
get by, economically speaking, and spending $40 for a can of release
probably doesn't sit well with the significant other when there's most
likely a lot of items the rest of the family needs. I know, been there,
done that.
Another part of this, I believe, is that in today's society, most people
have settled for corporate blandness, most anything anyone needs is
available, at a price, determined by committee to meet marketing/profit
needs. I think a lot of folks, probably most here, rebel at being looked
upon (by corporations) as mere Consumers.
Making things, even when they can be bought, and even if it ends up
costing more, is a way to strike back, to invoke a sense of self pride
in achievement that was commonplace a mere century ago.
I love what I do, machining and making things. Very few things in life
give me more pleasure than either making something from scratch, or
fixing something that most would have tossed.
Having said all that, there's certainly nothing wrong with a little
reality check now and then....
