This might be fine for a hobby setup, but doesn't cut it for commercial
use. My customers don't cut me any slack on finish or tolerance just
because I have a funky old machine. I often need to hold +/-.001 on
depth, and I need the spindle located held securely to do that.
Driving through the rack means backlash in the gears, not to mention the
interesting task of deriving step resolution vs quill travel.
