Don't bet on it. Depending on the condition of the ways and the lube used,
some older Bridgeports have 'sticky' knees, that have to be pulled down.
Then, if left right where they stopped moving, the knee will sometimes fall
downward without warning, for the distance of the screw's backlash.
Mine will sometimes do this. I always lower past where I want it, then raise
up at least half a turn on the crank, to be sure the screw is supporting the
knee.
