There is often .050" backlash from the fine feed handle to the quill
movement. You have a shaft keyed to a worm, worm wheel keyed to
shaft to overload clutch, overload clutch keyed to inner shaft keyed
to pinion, pinion to rack. Also, there is no expectation the quill
rack is ground to any sort of accuracy. I can';t imagine there would
be any use in putting an encoder or stepper on this. Might as well
just have a dc gear motor, or leave the power feed mechanism as is.

I can't even imagine any hobby use for something with .050"
backlash.
