I guess what I'm really looking for, then, (as Ballendo?
indicated) are "arbor" type AC induction motors. I already have
the spindle assembly taken care of; I just need a motor to attach
via belt.

I just priced Colombo spindles last week for a router. 3HP manual
collet
was about $1450. 3HP with ISO 20 and automatic tool change head
was $4500.
Inverters are extra.

These are considered premium quality stuff. Whether or not you
can use an
18,000 RPM spindle is another matter. To get 3HP at 5,000 RPM
with this
type of spindle you need one rated at about 10HP.
