Yes, the ATC version I looked at does require air or water cooling. The
cheaper one has an on-board fan and more mass. My real problem with these
spindles is that they are too fast for aluminum. Also, to use them for
drilling requires optional spindle bearings with better axial load carrying
ability.
I am looking at the possibility of using an old ISO-30 VMC spindle I found,
wrapping it in a nice aluminum housing. Then I could drive it with a cheap
motor and VFD through a multi-rib belt. Heavy, yes, but cheap and tough.
I'll hang a Porter-Cable on when I want to cut wood and foam.
