Only possible drawback might be trying to probe steep side walls.
I'm starting to take an interest in digitizing. I want to make some
scale running Ducati single engines. I have a 250 engine I can take
apart, and with a digitizing setup, could easily model everything.
Center and side cases however, are nearly vertical in places.
A vertical travel only probe might well bind from side force before
tripping any switch.

For my needs, I might just use something like an electronic edge finder,
but generate an output signal instead of lighting a bulb.
