HI Alex,

While you might "jog" an axis to get a reading on an edge, normally
there is a special command in the controller that causes the probe to
move in a grid pattern over the desired surface. The probe then makes Z
movements at each grid point, and saves the z values. Another way would
be to have the probe tip "creep" along the surface, and report
readings.

All of this is under "automatic" control of the program, the user
provides the coordinates of the rectangle (or box) that is to be
digitized.

Variations of probe functions are finding the center of a hole, or
"verifying" the dimensions of a part.
