Hi Alex,
OK, I see your line of thought. And indeed, A/D converters are used to
digitize pots.
As far as the probes used in CNC and CM, I believe you'll find the
equivalent of a switch in each of the 3 (or more) axis of movement.
These systems rely on the position accuracy of the CNC system for the
locations or offsets.
Where an A/D could be useful is in reading a potentiometer, with a user
set value, such as speed override, or any other value that might be
read.
A 144 Mhz (2 meter) digital radio that I built used an A/D channel to
read the volume control as I recall.
