Hi Nelson;

I'm not sure that this will be of much help, but the best thought I've heard on
this recently, was using a small laser diode with a phototrans to receive it's
signal, with both on the ends of a large, "U" arm, and the object in the middle.

When the signal goes away, it's into the object. The idea was to move say from
right to left till that happened, and then to jog it up and back to the right,
and then up and to the left to get the right side, and then go left, down, left
up, left, down, and etc,, to get the top of the object, taking readings all the
way, and then, of course, down, right, down, left, down, right, and etc., to get
the left side.

I'm not sure that would work well with a mechanical probe, but it's one person's
idea about it. Sorry, didn't keep the URL.
