I searched yahoo for "555 monostable diagram" and got
some good sites, the one I recommend is:

This is a good tutorial on a very simple and handy
hobby timer chip, the 555 timer.

Scroll down that page to "Monostable mode" and
Fig9a, and it should give you all the info you need.
