Relatively small motors should work on a 10" lathe, as the
leadscrews are usually 8 TPI on the carriage and 10 TPI on the
crossfeed. The compound is removed, as there is no need for it
anymore.

Software that specifically supports lathes, and all the features, should be
able to cut any thread you can imagine, including some you likely
would only imagine in a nightmare. Such as variable pitch threads,
threads on tapers, etc. Of course, any thread, including odd ones like
13.6275 TPI or 0.3456 mm can be cut, as well as standard metric
and imperial threads.

The modern VFDs usually have options to allow a DC voltage from 0-10 V
to control frequency. With a 3-phase motor, that is the simplest and
cheapest way. A servo amp is going to cost more.
