Since you are building your own lathe from scratch, why not put a servo
motor on it
instead of messing around with gearing. You can get some nice PM DC motors
surplus,
add an encoder to it ( www.usdigital.com ), put a servo amp on it and you
now can
use that as either a standard speed control by just inputting a PWM pulse
stream into
the servo amp or attach a CNC controller rotary axis output to it for real
threading
control.

If you can't find a motor that gives the torque you need for cutting you can
always gear
the motor drive down using some gears or timing belts but still not have to
mess with
change gears for threading.
