I am in the process in doing what you are planning, I used a Sherline cnc ready #4400 lathe, bought my steppers from ebay, I also bought driver/ ect. componets from ebay and built the controller. I using Microkinetics for the computer card and software, they have a nice additional kit you can add to do the threading though a encoder, which works though there computer card and software.
I am using Vector Cam to do the "G" code programming, but haven't yet upgraded the system with the thread kit from Microkinetics, but feel that will be my next step.
I have in the past use this group to help with all the questions on building my systems, hope this helps, please feel free to ask any questions on the above.

I am building a small lathe that I would like to be able to thread. I
have not selected a spindle head/motor yet. I am planning to use steppers
that are equipped with encoders for the XZ axis. The machine is on a limited
budget and I am guessing that a match is in the range of 1/2 hp for the
spindle. How involved is electronic gearing and can I use any motor to power
it if I use an encoder to keep track of its precise speed. I have not yet
selected which of the many controller setups to use I am a bit confused
whats-What. Thanks Josh
