Not true! Call up Rockwell Automation, formerly Allen-Bradley, and ask
them for
the price on their servo motors for a Bridgeport-sized machine. They
run about $3000,
I'm told! Depending on the size machine, $100 is not at all unresonable
for a good
surplus motor of servo quality. I've seen them lower, and higher, too.
If you can
be lucky enough to be looking when somebody just got a warehouse load of
them, you
get a good price. If everybody's surplus warehouse is running low, the
price goes
up.

One other place that has LOTS of stuff, and always sells cheap is Mike
Quinn's
just outside the Oakland, CA airport. You might have to talk to them
several
times, unless you are close enough to drop in, as they are a bit
disorganized.
But, it is a wonderful place to poke around in. I think they still have
Qume
printer motors, that are pretty good for smaller machines.
