Hi,
You are right, a DC supply has a plus and a minus. But just
like in a car, if you hook the minus to the frame of the car! The
frame becomes ground. Computers use a case ground system. This helps
eliminate RF noise. Digital signals need a ground. I used to work
with techs who did not hook there scope grounds to the circuit. Lots
of laughs watching them troubleshoot. Every IC in a computer has one
pin going to ground. The only exception might be an opto coupler in
the modem.
