SS50? yup! Good cheap way to start!

Do you have any computer languages available to you? 'C', BASIC,
Pascal, Assembly? If so, write a little program to send pulses to the
LPT port bits. Use pin 2 for step, pin 3 for direction, etc. put a
delay, such that the motor runs slow at first. Lottsa info on
programming Parallel ports on the web.

Check past messages for references to sites with free CNC software. I
think Oatley mentioned some software too!

Do you have access to a "function generator"? A 555 timer can be wired
up to generate a stream of steps. a 1K pullup resistor and a toggle
switch can be used to drive the direction line.

Check the CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO FAQ. You can also search the web for CNC
software, lottsa free programs/demos out there. Here's some:
