OK, time to step in and ask for everyone to take a deep breath on this.

There has been much voluble input provided on this question. There has also
been a lot of valuable personal opinions provided. We all need to realize
that we have diverse experiences , desires, and resources. For some of us
the thought of modifying an AC synchronous motor to make it a high
inductance stepper is a great money saver and we are willing to accept the
resulting performance. For others of us we only want to use the most optimum
solution and would rather spend more to know we have that. Both are valid
points of view.

Mariss has pointed out that based upon his professional experience you will
need a very high voltage to drive a converted motor in an optimal manner.
John and Art have pointed out that you can make them work at a much lower
voltage. Both are right.

Let's respect each others opinions and use the input to make an informed
decision for our own particular circumstances.
