Am I correct that the spindle had a cap that threads on to external threads
of the spindle and holds the collet in place front the front? If so, I can
understand how this would be a hard design to get a collet out of. You may
want to consider making up a tool to help remove these in the future. I
envision a high grade steel tube that just fits into the ID of the spindle
and has fairly thin walls so it will slide over the tool and contact the
back of the collet. I would then put a cap on the end that sticks out. If
the cap actually goes into the tube a distance (not far enough to hit the
tool) and was brass it may give enough weight that you just slide it in and
use it to tap the collet out without having to hit it with a hammer.
