Gotta Jump in here!
Don't put "lube" on a collet! It will only make things worse.
The Taig collets(also used by MaxNC) have 15 degree tapers, and ARE
compressed from the front, like a woodworking router.
If a collet of this type is sticking, there is most likely something
on the collet itself, or in the collet seat in the spindle causing
the problems. Very often(if precautions are not taken) some grit gets
in and creates a burr which then causes the sticking.
Could also be something on the cutting tool. OR, the use of precision
collets and "wrong size" tools for the collet. Collets are made for a
very narrow range of diameters (usually), and they like to have
REALLY ROUND shanks inserted (assumes round hole collets, obviously
<g>).
The other way this happens was referred to in an earlier post.Too
tight on the install. This is made worse by the lube idea, and often
the lube "migrates" to the tool holding surface, which can have
disastrous results! Silicone should not be anywhere NEAR collets, IMO!
So get that thing out of there and do some investigating. I'm sure
one of the things I've mentioned is at work. Correct it, and the
collet will work as designed.
Hope this helps.
