You might be able to re-install the balls by removing the ball return cover
but I've never tried that. You might need a little grease to hold the last
few in place.
Are you going to turn the bearing diameter directly on the screw material?
On mine (.750 screw) I just bored the end and pressed in a CRS stub shaft
with the features machined in it. I'm using a .500 dia stub on the
non-thrust bearing end. I believe the minor diameter of your screw is
around .480. Maybe you could go with a .375 id bearing on the one end.
