EMC doesn't need this as it runs under a multitasking operating
system. There is nothing to keep you from firing up emacs in another
window to tweak a g-code file while emc is still open or running
(provided you have a reasonably amount of memory - they used to call
emacs "eight megs and continuously swapping") I suppose they could
give you a button on the xemc panel to launch your chosen editor, but
there is little point in building in the editor functionality - xemc
would just get bigger, and someone would complain that they would
rather use a different editor.

Editing the configuration files while the program is running is more
uncertain - you would probably have to restart emc before the changes
take effect - but you don't have to close your editor, unless you run
into a file locking problems. Certain unix programs and utilities have
the ability to accept a "re-read config file" command(signal) while
they are running - perhaps that could be added.
