Some people have had success using a router with aluminum. A variable
speed unit that can be slowed down a bit, but still have lost of torque
is a good idea. The machine has to tightly control the position of the
router, or the tool will shake and gouge the material. The cutting forces
are much higher with metal than wood.

Steel is out of the question, I would think. I've never heard of anyone using

a router for steel. You might be able to do thin sheets clamped between
wood sheets. But, anything thicker than, maybe, .010" sounds like real
trouble. Copper is not so conducive to high speed machining, and I
think you'd have much trouble with it snagging and tearing.
The routers generally are not well shielded against coolant entering the
bearings, and you might need coolant for these type jobs.
