According to my gas chromatograph analysis for hydrocarbons a few
years ago, WD-40 contains no Naphtha, water, long chain
hydrocarbons. It contains no waxy materials. Since whatever is
there doesn't separate using gas chromatography using the capillary
columns I was using, I have to conclude that it is a higher order
alcohol type material. While it may displace water, it certainly
doesn't provide any lasting protection from rust since it contains
nothing that would do so.
