It also appears that an item may become more rust prone AFTER using WD-40. I
generally spray items with BoeShield T-10 after cleaning. So far, it's
provided a rustfree surface.

| years ago, WD-40 contains no Naphtha, water, long chain
| hydrocarbons. It contains no waxy materials. Since whatever is
| there doesn't separate using gas chromatography using the capillary
| columns I was using, I have to conclude that it is a higher order
| alcohol type material. While it may displace water, it certainly
| doesn't provide any lasting protection from rust since it contains
| nothing that would do so.
